Genetic reserve

The Andalusian Goat Selection and Improvement Centre, Caprigen, is part of the Spanish Network of Germplasm Banks and other collections of genetic material. The advantages of having a Germplasm Bank are: 1) Capacity to indefinitely preserve a breed or variety and the genetics of High Genetic Value Stallions that have already died 2) It allows the export of high-value genetic material to other countries with the maximum health guarantees. 3) Conservation is carried out independently of the conditions that affect the population managed in-situ, protecting the stored material from natural disasters and epizootics 4) It protects against genetic changes (intentional or accidental) that could occur, allowing the cryopreserved material to reverse the effects of incorrect selection or genetic drift caused by low census sizes 5) Recreate an extinct breed or strain on farms
